The Devil Wears Prada

Description:
For my illustration class, we were given a list of movies to choose from and create a movie poster. As part of our process, we were supposed to create a set of icons from the movie and incorporate them into our posters.

Process:
I did not have much trouble coming up with icons from the movie; however, illustrating them was a different story. I figured early on that I wanted to do a one-line style illustration for the poster, but some of the items were very difficult to illustrate in this way, especially the main characters’ faces (Miranda and Andy), the Runway magazine, and the shopping bags. What gave me success in illustrating these icons was really just the repetition of drawing them over and over again; after dozens of drawings, I picked up on more efficient ways to communicate certain information—especially in the faces.

Outcome:
Through arranging my icons into a sort of pattern, I was able to effectively show key moments of the movie subtly. I think the fact that my icons are hand-drawn gives my poster the essence of fashion drawings as well, which also conveys key themes from the movie.
