Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Description:
For my illustration class, I was assigned to the Cyndi Lauper song ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ to recreate a vinyl cover and merchandise.

Process:
This project felt very challenging to me, because I not only had a hard time deciding what imagery to use for the vinyl cover, but I also couldn’t decide on how to best illustrate the imagery. After a lot of researching on the 80s and asking friends what they thought could encapsulate this song, I landed on four women dancing to music in an old convertible. As for the illustration style, I decided to use a more sketchy, flat style. Using my layers effectively also made inserting my illustrations of the women into the car much easier.

Outcome:
For a project that I lost motivation for midway through, I’m very proud of my ability to stick with it and design a vinyl cover that speaks true to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. I think if I had more time, I would’ve gone back to add shadows and tweaked the colors a bit, but overall, I’m proud of my process for this project.
